Sloppy Taco Palace in Orlando

By

From the outside Sloppy Taco Palace, STP, looked more like Moe’s than a bar.

Not a bad thing what so ever.

Alongside the tex-mex/peppers and piñatas vibe, STP had the big kid feel of a bar, as well as a homey, made-from-scratch approach from the organically decrated over time exterior to the just whipped together presentation of their food and drinks

The walls are covered with random 35mm snapshots everywhere, aged light-up beer signs, sharpiefied walls, and, of course, a STP car oil stickers. G. I. Joes stagnantly battle atop the wine glass hanger and what looks like metal guard rails line the booths.

Over the bar is a four-footish model plane. Why? I don’t know. Let’s pretend it’s a metaphor for soaring sales or projectile vomit.
To get your nerd on or kitschy-retrospective-

nostalgia on, STP has a wall of arcade games, of which I wished I remembered to write down. Beer makes things hard. But, I assure you they are all up to the dude-I-used-to-play-this-as-a-kid/this-is-sick caliber.

Mostly done in coffee shops and artsy café’s, local artists hang their work on the walls in almost every booth to be sold. With all of the works everywhere, at some moments it was hard to tell where the tattoos of patrons ended and the art began.

When I got there, I found out that every Thursday and Friday they have bands play. I came on the wrong night and missed out, but the regulars assured me they were all good. Which is cool because not only are the drinkers regulars, but performers are as well.

STP doesn’t seem to rely on consistency and, when it comes to certain specials, they can only be learned of by The Chalkboards. When you walk in and enter the bar area, pastel-neon chalk is scribbled last minutely. Maybe because spontaneity is what gives them their. Maybe to promote regulars to routinely check up on the deals. Or maybe day-specific specials promote different scenes that the bar would have to cater, depending on the day, instead of having a homogenous group of functional lushes.

Or maybe I am just reading too far into it.

Smoking is welcome outdoors, however there are only a few high chairs outside so prepare to stand.

If you want to hastily add a person you just met on the Facebook as they are walking out the door, they have free WI-FI to aid in your premature online social awkwardness.

TV’s? Yes. But, don’t expect anything other than sports.

I’m not a sports gal, but sports in a bar is a good thing. Those glued to the TV are people who aren’t there to mingle, but some one is willing to sacrifice missing a touchdown is there to socialize. It’s kind of like how you don’t bother someone at a coffee shop who is reading, but it’s ok to chat it up with someone who is just there for the coffee.

Dress is casual or whatever you feel like (think Moe’s: The Sports and Art Cantina).

The only concrete, set in stone, given to Moses drink special is their “Alcoholic Stimulus Plan" on Tuesdays. $2 Cuervo shots and $5 Jager bomb from open to close, as well as $2 sloppy tacos to satisfy the subsequent the drunk-munchies.

Happy hour is daily from open-7 PM and again from 12 AM-2 AM.

Their all day, everyday drink specials are Miller High Life for $1.75, PBR and Mickey’s Malt Liquor for $2.00, $12 buckets of Tecate or Wittekerke, $5.25 Smirnoff doubles, and $3 Jose Cuervo Shots.
Sloppy Taco Palace is located at 4892 Kirkman Rd. They are open Monday-Friday from 11:30 AM-2AM and Saturday-Sunday from 4PM-2AM.
